![]() ![]() Due to the inevitable fuzziness of PS1-era spectral projection, I'm just using concept art of him, seen above on the left. The aforementioned merchant and long-deceased master of Voldo, Vercci appeared in Soul Edge as an apparition in one of Voldo's endings. Regardless, it's cool that Namco has two series to go nuts with one "character." Soulcalibur's Yoshimitsu will adhere to slightly more grounded aesthetics as his future successor plays with his wardrobe more and more in the years to come. I've admittedly always thought the Yoshimitsus of both series dressed more like samurai than ninjas, and the Yoshimitsu we see here looks almost like a shogun (or the Western perception of one), what with the crested helmet and all. This Yoshimitsu appears far more "normal" than what the more alienesque Tekken version would gradually become starting with that series' third game, and wears ornate armor with a demon-themed mask and a mounted flag on his back. Come Soulcalibur, we learn that the Manji Clan exists in this universe as well and that the name Yoshimitsu is a title passed down via ceremonial combat and beheading. Yoshimitsu was one of the inaugural characters of Namco's more well-known 3D fighting game franchise, serving as a representative of the Manji Clan of ninjas. This is my favorite default design for Mi-na and I sincerely wish it had been the template for her in future games. I also like that her gloves and boots match with each other as they did in Soul Edge. The advances in the rendering have done wonders for Mi-na, her costume has much more intricate patterning on the shiny fabric which gives it an extra pop. She also has what I will refer to as a yellow shawl until one of you fine people provides me the proper terminology. ![]() The orange is allowed to breathe without fighting for my eyes' attention, though it is complemented by flecks of green at the tip of the loin- and breechcloths and her earrings. Her top and loincloth are a pretty shade of orange-red and that'll be her signature color for a while. You're going to hear it a lot when I talk about Mi-na.įor her appearance in Soulcalibur, she thankfully gained a more streamlined design with fewer clashing colors. "Loincloth" was my old standby word from the Mortal Kombat thread. There's a level of stylization to be expected with the garbs of every character in this franchise, though because of my complete ignorance of Korean fashion and culture of this era (circa early 1580's) I don't even know what she's wearing half the time. Mi-na is a character whose design influences I am very curious to know more about. I'm not huge on the Soul Edge design, but it has probably the only mask on Taki that I like and flows a bit better than its successor, which looks unfinished in some respects. Frankly, I would've probably just removed it and the cloth around the neck. And I don't care much for her plain cloth mask which also just looks painted on in the render. Also, it feels like the two aforementioned design elements cancel each other out. At that point, she really is just wearing bodypaint, and that's no fun to talk about in a design thread. ![]() I don't see much point in having spandex tight enough that you can see her nipples, and then also having the suit sport a cleavage window. Taki in Soulcalibur is mostly the same as she was in 1995, just with new shinguards and less fabric covering the skin. My personal experiences have been that even if I could tolerate the painted-on suit, I usually dislike her masks. It's all just a matter of certain visual parts existing to distract from or downplay the elements I dislike the most. That may be because most of her primary costumes are just remixes of an older costume I don't think was that good to begin with. Let's make something clear: I don't think there are any good default Taki designs. ![]()
